The rainbow flag was created by artist Gilbert Baker for San Francisco Pride in 1978. His first version had eight stripes. The six-stripe flag on this pin, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet, has been the standard since 1979 and is flown with red on top, the way a real rainbow sits in the sky.
